Why MULTITASKING isn’t efficient?

Human brain was known to be one of the most complex organs that exists among all the organisms on Earth; not only because of its complex structure but also its incomprehensible function that is still pondering the minds of the greatest scientists until today. The first and foremost function of the brain was that it basically controls every parts of the body, and that’s probably what most people think about the brain and it is not wrong. Talking in detail the brain is mostly responsible for our cognitive capabilities as a whole which include how the brain processes when us, humans, are performing daily tasks as well as complicated ones such as our homework, office assignments, and so on. Which, it should be noted that in this modern world every individual inevitably have to encounter unlimited amount of tasks to be done within the day, which this loop goes on in a day-to-day basis; ergo, people tend to follow the trend of multitasking by believing that if they practiced it enough, they would be able to complete their daily tasks effectively and efficiently. However, that was absolutely wrong as the brain actually is incapable of handling various tasks as the same time sufficiently and productively, because first of all, there’s no such thing as multitasking; focus on one particular work at a time is important; and ‘multitasking’ would use too much of your energy compared to the work done.
.
.
Before going into any further discussion regarding this topic, it must be established that multitasking doesn’t really exists, and by saying that you are multitasking it would be better to describe the action as task-shifting. The typical understanding of multitasking was to do multiple works at the same time, and was believed to be effective and less time consuming compared to the productivity. However, that is impossible reckon the capability of the human brain and its energy usage as a whole, and therefore what you were doing the whole time was task-shifting since it is unrealistic to do multiple tasks at the same time. Task-shifting was when you constantly shift your focus on different tasks rapidly, which can be really fatal to the outcome of your work. This not only will waste your time as you need to regain flow of each work, but also would create more errors in all of your work during that time period, since your energy was used inefficiently by the brain, or more specifically the cerebral cortex, due to the rapid change of focus on your works.
.
.
One of the most important and needed substantially when you want to finish a task proficiently is focus. To your surprise, the habit of multitasking or task-shifting absolutely denied your ability to focus effectively on your tasks. Firstly, according to Jim Kwik. focus can be understood simply as ‘Fixed Ongoing Concentration Until Success’. On the one hand, a great focus on a work would create a flow in your pace while doing that work, which the flow if continued successively would literally give you a time zone of productivity and obviously, with more focus and flow, works would be done with less mistakes and would be completed in a lesser amount of time. On the other hand, as stated, if you get into the habit of task-shifting what will happen was that your brain would have to go through an excessive amount of refocusing on many works in a very short amount of time since people would thrive to ‘multitask’ as much as possible due to the fact that they want to finish their work as soon as they could. As a result, the brain could not keep up with all the activities that were processing in such a short amount of time.
.
.
A fact that adds up to why you should not multitask is that it actually makes your cerebral cortex consume more energy or glucose more than it initially needed. For each task to be get going with a good flow, it needs an activation energy, just like how neurons needed enough initial millivolts to get the process of relay information going, the brain must use an amount of energy to shift the rule and find the rules for each task. The first thing that will happen right after task switching is the goal shifting, the brain with executive control responsibility have to find a particular goal in relation to the coming work that you will do in order to activate for sense of focus to be able to achieve that goal precisely. Next, rule activation is the second stage of what’s going to happen when we shift tasks, after your brain concentrated on the goal, it then asked of how to achieve it, what is the process needed in order to fulfill that goal; ergo, rule activation carried on in the brain, it will find the rules of how to do that task just like switching the theme of your cognitive senses in that moment. For instance, when doing a mathematic work, your brain recalls your past related mathematics knowledge, whereas when biological work must be done, your biological knowledge flows in. As the brain gets through these stages it requires energy; therefore, if we frequently switch tasks the brain has to use the activation energy repeatedly; consequently, we would be mentally exhausted without even realizing it.
.
.
In conclusion, multitasking is definitely not a recommended way to be productive as it actually is just switching tasks, it would weaken you focus, and it makes you uptake too much of your energy compared the quality of work done. It must be clarified by now that it is not worth it to be multitasking, and you should refrain from it. Therefore, it’s better to have a long session of each work and have a little break in between each time intervals. And in case if you wonder, listening a song while doing your work is not considered as multitasking as there is not goal to be establish in that occasion. Lastly, on your behalf, stay focused.
