Present Continuous
1. Talk about actions that are happening at the moment of speaking.
Ex:
- The children are playing football now.
- What are you doing at the moment?
2. Follow requests and imperative sentences.
Ex:
- Look! The child is crying.
- Be quiet! The baby is sleeping in the next room.
3. Talk about near future
Ex:
- He is coming tomorrow.
- My parents are planting trees tomorrow.
4. Describe temporary actions or situations or repeated actions that are going on around the present (may be before, during and after the moment of speaking).
Ex:
I'm reading a novel these days.
She is learning French this month.
5. Talk about changing and developing situations
Ex:
- The children are growing fast.
- House prices are going up.
Note: Stative verbs do not usually describe actions. They describe states (feelings and thought). They are not usually used in the present continuous form. Here are the list of some common stative verbs: to be, see, hear, understand, know, like, want, glance, feel, think, smell, love, hate, realize, seem, remember, forget, belong to, believe ...
We use PRESENT SIMPLE with these verbs.
Ex:
- I am tired now.
- She wants to go for a walk at the moment
