It’s not a scene or a location from the film of the same name, directed by John Woo but it’s a lesser known tourist attraction in Amphoe Bang Saphan Noi in Prachuab Khirikhan Province. What makes the place unique is ,of course, the red colored cliffside visible from afar. It is 5 kilometres long and 30 metres high.
How long will that tree last up there?
It’s all about geographical process. The cliff itself composed of lateral soil that has been constantly eroded by endless waves from the sea for as long as anyone can remember. The old folks I encountered told me that “It’s been like this since I was a child”
It’s nature against nature here.
It was a wonder for me while wandering along the cliff. The place was literally deserted. There were a few fishermen working on their boats near the entrance. The further I walked , the more quiet the place had become. There were many spots that I had let my imagination lead the way so that I could see the beauty that has been hidden in plain sight. I stopped for pictures in many spots along the red coastline.
Red dirt versus green vegetation
As you can see that there was nobody there. There was only me and the wonders of nature. Unfortunately, the place wasn’t clean. There were trash and debris scattered all around along the coast so I had to walk carefully. I even found a few broken bottles !!
Cautions : Obstacles Ahead !!
Apart from those man-made obstacles, there were some spot that nature has created a test for man to overcome. The path was blocked by fallen chunks of lateral soil. They must have been there for some time since nature has claimed them by putting overgrown vines over them.
The victor and the defeated
I had walked exactly 2.5 kilometres then doubled back to the entrance. The way back offered a different view that I could admired all the way there.
A dried up small stream
On the way back, I noticed that there were only my footprints that I had made on the way in. It was a proof that I was the first visitor there that day and it was late afternoon already by then. Lesser known indeed !!
The power of nature
I was back to where I began the journey. Those fishermen smiled at me and asked how it was. I eagerly replied with excitement that I was very impressed with what I had seen there. It was worth the trip. I promised myself that the next time I would visit in the morning so that I could see a different atmosphere. I expected that sunrise could do some of its magic to the place. How beautiful it would be, I would see it on my next trip there.
Dried coconut in a clear water
Getting there : From the Highway Number 4, turn left onto Road Number 3497 and head 10 kilometre towards Amphoe Bang Saphan Noi. Drive pass the town and go straight until you hit Road Number 1015. This road zigzags through coconuts groves and villages for about 10 kilometres. Bang Fang Deang School on your right is a landmark that signal that you’re almost there. Turn left and immediately turn another left onto a small alley with no sign. Follow this road to its end and you’re there.
