🔬Nevus of Ota is a type of dermal melanocytosis that causes brown-blue hyperpigmentation of the eye and the surrounding area. The treatment choice for Nevus of Ota is laser therapy. Treatment can begin at any time, including early infancy. The hyperpigmentation may darken and extend with age, such as during puberty and after menopause. Sunlight can also darken the lesions.
There is a similar skin condition called nevus of Ito. It has many of the same features to nevus of Ota but appears on the shoulder and side of the neck.
Nevus of Ota has been successfully treated by lasers. Currently, 1064 nm picosecond Nd:YAG lasers have become available for the treatment of pigmented disorders.
