SEAkers in Dialogue Summary
On 10th August, The Young SEAkers Thailand launched a SEAkers in Dialogue online seminar on the topic “ASEAN through the lens of Journalist''. It is our honor to have Mr. Wongpun Amarinthewa - the editor from The101.world - as guest speaker in this event.
Our online seminar started with Mr. Wongpun’s inspiration in publicizing articles about ASEAN affairs. Mr. Wongpun said that ASEAN related issues received a huge attention in the public during 2011-2015, as government and media sectors focused on Thailand’s readiness for stepping into ASEAN community.
In addition, his study and work experiences also make him interested in Southeast Asian affairs. After working in The101.world, Mr. Wongpun launched the “ASEAN without Guide'' podcast to discuss many intriguing issues about ASEAN and analyze what we can learn from those issues.
Afterward, Mr. Wongpun shared his experience from interviewing with the anti-junta people armed forces in Myanmar. He said that the media have to make the audience realize that ASEAN related issues are close to our lives. Regarding challenges, freedom of press in ASEAN countries, access to information sources, and language barriers are major challenges when publicizing news or articles about ASEAN.
Apart from this, Mr. Wongpun discussed the work ethnic of journalists and suggested that journalists should be based on the facts and must be careful when touching on sensitive issues such as religious and international relations.
In addition, we also discussed with Mr. Wongpun about challenges faced by journalists in Thailand in publicizing news about ASEAN.
Nowadays, the media coverage on ASEAN affairs in Thailand is less than other ASEAN countries, especially in the post 2015, as the enthusiasm of Thai social media in publicizing news on ASEAN issues is clearly declining. In this regard, Mr. Wongpun accepted that the social trend significantly affects the working of journalists. Thus, how to narrate ASEAN related issues in an interesting way and how to make all groups of people easily grasp information are major questions for journalists.
In addition, he also emphasized the significant role of the media in publicizing ASEAN related issues, because ASEAN is not an irrelevant topic, and we can learn more from policy implementation or momentous events in each country.
Lastly, we would like to send our gratitude to Mr. Wongpun from The101.world for sharing his experiences and insights about publicizing news or articles on ASEAN issues with TYS Thailand members and audiences in our social media platforms. We are looking forward to collaboration with The101.world in the future!
