Congress passed the 25th Amendment in 1965 to change a portion of Article II, Section I of the United States Constitution. The amendment aimed to answer several questions that can arise when a president or vice president dies or becomes incapacitated. It was clear that if a president died, resigned, or was removed from office, the Vice President was next in the line of succession.
But would they inherit the office of the president or only their duties? Who, in turn, takes over the Vice President’s duties? What happens if a president becomes unable to perform their duties due to debilitating illness or injury? Congress tried to answer these questions with the Twenty-Fifth Amendment.
