Kasetsart University iscovered 2 new species of yeast in the world.
A research team of the Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University discovered 2 new species of
yeast, which have never been discovered in the world. This was an important phenomenon of the
agriculture and food industry R&D in Thailand and around the world.
The Kasetsart University research team comprises of Prof. Dr. Savitree Limtong and Dr. Pannida
Khunnamwong; Lecturer, Department of Microbiology in the Faculty of Science discovered a new
species of yeast in the world from 2 types of wild mushrooms in Thailand, which was Metahyphopichia
suwanaadthiae and Wickerhamiella nakhonpathomensis. These can be useful for agriculture and food
production.
The Metahyphopichia suwanaadthia yeast was identified for 5 strains from 3 communities.
It was received from wild mushrooms in Srisaket, insects dust in Amnat Charoen, and Soil in Rayong.
The Wickerhamiella nakhonpathomensis yeast was identified for 2 strains from 2 communities. It was
received from mushrooms that were discovered in Mueang Nakhon Pathom District and Coffee
Blossoms in Mueang Chiang Mai.
The discovery of the two new species of yeast, by the research team of Kasetsart University, was
the important first step of the potential that to be used in both creating and innovating that helps solve
problems and promote farmers of the country.
And this can be improved industrial research for driving
the nation toward the bio-economy and agriculture development in the future.
