“Blue Crab Chili Paste”: The U2T project of Kasetsart University helps generate income to community
Kasetsart University cooperates with the University to Tambon project (U2T) to organize development activities in Koh Siboya Sub-district, Nuea Khlong District, Krabi.
The U2T is a project of Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation that encourages universities to use knowledge, research, technology, innovation and resources to develop communities and the country. And take the country's issues to improve manpower, knowledge, technology and create new innovations for driving the country development.
Kasetsart University took this opportunity to help develop the marketing and upgrade the product “Blue Crab Chili Paste”, a district product that originated from a group of housewives who lived in Koh Siboya Sub-district. In the earliest stage of the project, before Kasetsart University visited the community with the team of U2T to survey area and initiated development plan, the group earned revenue about 5,000 Baht/month.
The developing plan focused on pushing the product to be known including building a brand and redesigning of a package, to be able to compete in the chili paste market both domestically and internationally. And pushing the Blue Crab Chili Paste to be a good item for a present and souvenir form the Koh Siboya Sub-district.
After Kasetsart University came to help in the development the revenue increased to 15,600 baht/month. It is expected that the revenue from the Blue Crab Chili Paste will increase in the future.
The Blue Crab Chili Paste is a processed food from blue crabs, it is mixed both the meat and the shell so that the product has high calcium. It is suitable for consumer health person including the elderly. It can be eating easily. The product is ready to be export and can be a souvenir for visitors.
