Like pebbles in a stream, it is usually through collisional abrasion that we eventually come to honour the contours of our own character. These portraits are like fossils, temporarily framed in the sediment of their time. I wanted to see if such a seemingly cold and dispassionate medium could express warmth, hope, joy, strength, wisdom, kindness and even sensuality. I have been quietly amazed by the vast arrays of expression possible. Justin Bateman

Watching the sea never ceased to ground me. It was unchangeable. It was constant. Whatever happened - whatever seasons came and went, whatever way the wind blew, whatever was going on in the world, whatever was going on in the lives of the people who walked along the shores - the waves always just did what they did best. They came and went.
