Edward Thorndike

Edward Thorndike was an American psychologist who made significant contributions to the fields of education and psychology. He was an influential American psychologist who is most famous for his contributions to behaviorism and the theory of learning.
Here are Thorndike's three laws of learning:
  • Law of Effect : Individuals are more likely to repeat a behavior that leads to positive outcomes and less likely to repeat a behavior that results in negative consequences. For example, if a teacher praises a student for excellent participation in class discussions (positive outcome), the student is more likely to continue engaging actively in future discussions.
  • Law of Exercise : The more a connection between a stimulus and a response is practiced or repeated, the stronger it becomes. In teaching, if a teacher consistently reinforces a particular skill or concept through repeated practice, such as regular math drills, students are more likely to master that skill over time.
  • Law of Readiness : Effective learning occurs when individuals are mentally and emotionally ready to receive and process information. For instance, a teacher may find that introducing a complex scientific concept when students have already gained some foundational knowledge on the topic enhances their readiness to grasp the more advanced material.
In the context of teaching, these laws underscore the importance of positive reinforcement, repetitive practice for skill development, and consideration of students' readiness and motivation for effective learning experiences.
