Keratosis pilaris rubra is a variant of keratosis pilaris, with more prominent erythema and with more widespread areas of skin involvement in some cases, but without the atrophy or hyperpigmentation noted in certain keratosis pilaris variants. It seems to be a relatively common but uncommonly reported condition.
🔬Keratosis pilaris, a common skin condition, does not usually require treatment. Still, you can improve your skin’s appearance with certain medicated creams, moisturizers, or laser treatment.
KP is a common benign cutaneous disease. However, it can be emotionally and socially debilitating to patients. Despite its high prevalence, data on KP treatment is sparse. The available literature supports the use of laser therapy in the treatment of various types of KP. PDL and IPL appear to be effective in the treatment of KPR and KPA while pulse diode and QS:Nd YAG lasers seem to be a suitable treatment options for patients with refractory KP lesions.
Topical therapies including emollients, tacrolimus, azelaic acid, salicylic acid demonstrated treatment efficacy for KP. Efficacy of vitamin A-related topicals appears to be limited to tazarotene, and topical vitamin D was not effective for the treatment of KP lesions.
When to seek medical help
Keratosis pilaris does not usually cause physical discomfort. But if your skin is itchy or painful, see a dermatologist for treatment. A dermatologist is a medical specialist who treats conditions affecting your skin, nails, and hair.
You should also consider seeing a dermatologist for treatment if you’re emotionally distressed or worried about the appearance of keratosis pilaris. Even though this condition is harmless, it may be upsetting for some people.
What is laser treatment for keratosis pilaris?
If medicated creams and at-home treatments don’t do the trick, you may wish to discuss laser skin resurfacing treatment with a dermatologist.
Laser treatments use a wavelength of light to remove outside layers of skin. This treatment can eliminate bumps, rough patches, and brown spots.
There are several different types of lasers that a doctor may choose.found that fractional carbon dioxide lasers were effective in eliminating keratosis pilaris bumps.
A doctor may add microdermabrasion to a laser treatment plan for keratosis pilaris. This minimally invasive procedure “sands” away the outer layer of your skin.
Our findings demonstrate that the most supported form of treatment for KP is laser therapy, particularly the QS:Nd YAG laser. Topical treatments - including Mineral Oil-Hydrophil Petrolat, tacrolimus, azelaic acid, and salicylic acid - are also effective at least for improving the appearance of KP.
