Ceremony of the Keys at Tower of London. 16 September 2024
Last night, I was a guest of the Yeoman Warder to the event called the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. This is an ancient ritual that still continues until today.
It was a great privilege to be a witness to this ceremony which is over 700 years old and which has been run everyday exactly at the same time, unless during WWII when the ceremony was delayed by about 11 minutes because of an air raid.
A Yeoman Warder is a guard who protects the Tower of London and also runs the daily Ceremony of the Keys. This ceremony is the procedure to lock the Tower every night.
I met John Donald, one of the Yeoman Warder and he lives inside the Tower.
It was so fascinating to hear the history, including many executions and death. There were no other tourists at all which normally is about 3,000 visitors within the fortress.
John was a fantastic guide, telling us about history and life in the tower. They also have The Yeoman Warder’s Private Club inside and we were invited inside for a drink.
At 21:30 we were gathered to watch the Ceremony of the Keys. The Key itself also represents the King - ‘King Charles’ keys’. I was glad to be a part of it and to see it.
