In 1993, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khrueajit and I traveled to visit Nyakur at Ban Nam Lat, Thepsathit District, Chaiyaphum Province. They hid in a hole next to their house before they came out to find us. After observing us for 20 minutes, they trusted them and came out to find us.
.......They said that their ancestors migrated from the Phanom Dong Rek mountain range. Some of them stepped on a landmine and died. They also said that they brought another family from Surin (Tha Tum district ) to live with them to help protect them. The Surin Khmer people call them "Niaa Kur"....We saw a group of women casting wax or beeswax into flowers. They prepared for the procession of the wax castle.
....When they sang and danced to the Krachae song, a middle-aged woman wore a sleeveless black "Kaoh" shirt embroidered with green, white and red snake bones. She sang a song and played a drum (similar to the Surin Kantrum drum) for the shaman to spin the bowl and wax candles while breathing in the spiral cult until she entered a trance and forgot herself. They are delirious that they are "Kur-Dongrek or Kur
Dong ".
..So the spirits (Plong) of the people in the community often escape and get lost on many peaks in Phnom Dongrek. Therefore, a spirit possession ceremony (Zhou
Plong) must be held to call them back, so that the health of the people and society will be as complete as before.
......Today, this generation of Nyahkur only knows the Phetchabun mountain range, but still preserves the folklore of "mountain people" and can expand the "knowledge power" of the Nyahkur people in many districts of Chaiyaphum Province and preserves the ancient wisdom very well.
